Blender Conference 2023

production pipelines for interactive platforms

Accepted as speakers for the 2023 Blender Conference in Amsterdam, Philip McCloskey and myself created a presentation of case studies demonstrating how our production pipeline had evolved over the past 4 years. Initially integrating Blender as a small part of existing production pipelines, and how that slowly changed into building pipelines entirely inside Blender using custom toolsets created in-house at Vectorform.

Custom Plugins

Learning both Blender and Python in the past four years, I've created a number of tools and small utilities for Blender that I've been publishing on GitHub. This presentation was the perfect opportunity to show some of our latest work, including pipelines for automotive HMI design systems where we needed capabilities that hadn't existed yet in Blender, and conclude the presentation with links to the free resources on GitHub.

Reception

Philip was unable to attend in person, so I ended up presenting on my own, adding Philip's pre-recorded message the day before the presentation. Though nervous as a presenter at a conference I'd never attended before, it went well and I enjoyed the experience immensely. Though I'm relatively unknown, attendance was still good and the discussions afterward were great. Perhaps the most fun was the silly reveal toward the end that the entire presentation had been built and rendered in Blender using Geometry Nodes and rendering automation to make it particularly efficient. Plenty of applause for that!
